Berkley, MA – (October 13, 2008) – While practicing for the D. Anthony Venditti Memorial 100 on Friday, Jake sustained several injuries when the transmission exploded in his #16 Propane Plus / Aubuchon Hardware Ford Fusion. Coming to take the green flag, Jake brought the car up to speed only to have it come around in a puff of smoke. When officials arrived at Jake’s car, the ambulance was called for immediately as Jake had sustained serious injuries to his right arm and right leg. At Rhode Island Hospital, he was diagnosed with a broken right arm, a broken tibula bone in his right leg, and a deep gash into his right elbow.
“That was a scary thing. I have hit the wall wide open before and this does not even compare. It was like a bomb exploded in the racecar. I am really grateful that I was not hurt even worse. A broken arm and a broken bone is nothing compared to what could have happen,” Jake said after being released from the hospital early Saturday morning.
These injuries could not keep Jake away from the season-ending event at the Seekonk Speedway (MA), though. After being released from the hospital, Jake, with the assistance of his race team, went immediately to the racetrack, only to be greeted by hoards of people who were happy to see the fan favorite at the Speedway.
“It was an unfortunate way to end an otherwise awesome season. The last two weeks, with my Dad’s injury and mine, has kind of put a damper on it, but overall, we had a good time, we did well, and we learned a lot. I am already for 2009 to start.”
